6.amaze,astonish,surprise辨析

这三个词都表示“惊奇、惊异”，amaze和astonish程度较强，指“惊讶、吃惊”；surprise程度最弱，指“诧异、意外”。

amaze 强调对意外的事感到迷惑，或表示惊叹之情,使吃惊,程度比surprise强(=surprise very much),一般指好事.(be amazed at sth./to do sth.)
He’s amazed that she should get promoted over his head.他对她得以迈过他而提升感到惊异。

astonish 使惊愕,指使人大吃一惊(=surprise greatly),含有几乎使人无法相信之意,是个语气较强的词(sb. be astonished at(by) sth./to do sth./that..."被(因)...惊吓")

surprise 使惊异,指由于突然的事情使人产生惊奇,有出乎意料的含义.普通用词,语气最弱. (sb. be surprised at/by sth./that.../to do sth..feel surprised at..."对...感到惊讶".in surprise"吃惊地,在震惊中")

7. condense, reduce, contract, compress辨析

compress-指通过压、挤、熨平等方式使物体变小或减少而少占一些空间。

8. argument，controversy，debate，dispute 辨析

argument： 口头上的辩论、争论，后接about引出争论的话题。

controversy： 主要指两集团（派别）之间持久的正式辩论，后接over引出辩论的话题。

dispute： 比argument正式，指由于相互驳斥对方的观点而产生的激烈争论，后接about或over引出争论的话题。
