　　Once there was a handsome young man named Narcissus, many people fell in love with him, including a lovely woman named Echo. Narcissus was conceited（自负的） and mean, and he liked to be alone, so he rejected Echos love, and she was so sad that she went to hide in the mountains.

　　This made the gods very angry. They decided to let Narcissus know how it felt to love someone and not be loved in return.

　　One day Narcissus put his face near the water, and saw a beautiful young man looking back at him, he fell in love right away.

　　Narcissus could not stop looking at his reflection（倒影）, and soon he died beside the pool. Out of pity, the gods changed him into a flower called narcissus（水仙花）.

　　「读书笔记」

　　once意思是“曾经”，如：I was a kid once too.（我也曾经是个孩子。）曾经，有一位英俊的少年名叫Narcissus，许多人爱上他，（many people fell in love with him）其中包括一位迷人的女郎Echo.（including a lovely woman named Echo）他自负又小气，而且喜欢独处，（he liked to be alone）所以他拒绝了Echo的求爱，（so he rejected Echos love）她因此悲伤地躲到了群山之中。（she was so sad that she went to hide in the mountains）

　　so…that句型还记得吗？She is so fat that cant wear the pants she bought last year.（她太胖了，以至于穿不下去年买的裤子了。）

　　make有“致使”的意思，The pepper made me sneeze.（这胡椒粉让我打喷嚏。） Narcissus的做法使得他们很生气。（This made the gods very angry）于是，他们决定让他尝尝单恋的滋味。（how it felt to love someone and not be loved in return）（以其人之道还治其人之身嘛！呵呵……）

　　in return是“作为回报”的意思，当你爱上别人，却不能以被爱作为回报，那该是怎样的痛苦啊！所以，奉劝大家，还是珍惜别人的感情，Be loved and give your love in return.（被爱，然后爱人。）当然，如果你实在不喜欢那个人，还是应该及早明确告诉人家哦！除了爱，还有许多东西也可以作为回报，比如鲜花，He gave her some roses in return for her kindness.（他送了她一些玫瑰以答谢她的好意。）注意：in return for后面接的是你酬谢人家的原因。

　　一天，Narcissus把脸靠近水面时，（Narcissus put his face near the water）看见一个英俊少年正在看着他，（saw a beautiful young man looking back at him）于是他立刻爱上了那个人。（he fell in love right away）

　　Narcissus忍不住一直盯着自己的倒影看，（Narcissus could not stop looking at his reflection）没多久他便死在池塘边。（soon he died beside the pool）注意：beside是“在……近旁”的意思，而besides则是“此外、除了”的意思，如：Besides, I want you to promise me one thing.（此外,我要你答应我一件事。）What has he done, besides reading the paper?（除了看报,他还做了什么?）

　　众神出于同情，（Out of pity）把它变成了一朵水仙花。（changed him into a flower called narcissus）

　　out of pity出于怜悯、同情

　　Out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt.
　　出于怜悯，这位贵族释放了它的奴隶，并且免去了它的债务。

　　同情心是人类可贵的财富，可是也不能部分场合的随便使用，要知道：

　　To marry a man out of pity is folly. （出于同情而加给一个男人是愚蠢的。）

　　「语法小教室」

　　今天的小教室，我们来区别一下写法和意思都相近的三个词：lone, alone and lonely

　　［误］ The old man lived lone but he didnt feel lonely.
　　［正］ The old man lived alone, but he didnt feel lonely.

　　第一句话为什么错了呢？因为lone（孤单的，寂寞的）只能做定语，比如：In that cloudy sky only one lone star could be seen.（在那多云的天上,只能看到孤零零的一颗星星。）lone做star的定语。alone则只能作表语，比如：She watches TV when she is alone.（独自一人时,她便看电视。）

　　这位独居的老人，却并不感到lonely，可见，这个词多指感情上与感觉上的孤独，举个例子：When his wife died, he was very lonely.（太太死后他非常孤独。）

　　此外，lonely表示"偏僻的，荒凉的"，试体会这个句子：

　　Crusoe was alone on the lonely island, but he didnt feel lonely.
