Reading Section: Time Management
A TOEFL TIGER VISITOR WROTE:
Hi,
First, I want to thanks for your hardworking in making such great show - Toefl Tigers.
It really helps me a lot in preparing the toefl ibt exam.
You guys summarize the valuable points in tackling the exam and provide your experience in how you evaluate the answers.
I am a student in Taiwan and going to take the exam in this month.
I will introduce this show to everyone who need some advice in taking the toefl in the future.
I really love your show, thank you.
There is a small question and I hope you can give me some advice.
In reading section, I always feel rush and can not keep the good pace.
I mean, I know that I should glimpse the article as quickly as possible. But, I just can not summarize the point and memorize in my mind.
So, when I look at the question, I had go back to read the paragraph repeatedly to figure it out.
Is there any good advice that you can help me?
Any suggestion will be appreciated, thank you.
Best regards.
Pei-Nong
from Taiwan.
TOEFL TIGER RESPONSE:
Thank you for the kind words! The reading section causes a lot of problems for every TOEFL test taker and this is a great question about how to manage time. I push for an average of one minute per question. This means that main idea, vocabulary, detail, negative detail, reference, purpose, inference, and sentence insertion questions should take about a minute to answer. If you cannot find the answer, then guess and write the question number down in your notes. It’s important to keep up a quick pace because you will get to the answers that you find easier to solve. Those easy points might be at question five, eight, or ten, for example, but if you take too much time on each question before, you might not get to eight or ten. When practicing at home for the iBT TOEFL test, use a stopwatch. Write down how fast you are this week and write down how many guesses you made. Then check your progress in a few weeks. Hopefully, the number of guesses will go down and your time will reduce so that you have more time for the difficult questions. Don’t try to memorize the passage. You’re doing the right thing by going back and forth between the text and the question. Just put a time limit on it and stick to it. Hopefully, if you spend about a minute on each question except for the last chart questions, then you will have some extra time to go back and work on the ones you guessed on. It sounds like you’re doing a good job. Hang in there and good luck.
