名师指导：新GRE考试改革应对策略

　　2011年8月1日开始将实行改革以后的GRE考试(以下简称新GRE)，其中语文部分变化较大。本文以语文部分新增的文本完成题(Text completion questions)为例说明如何应对新GRE。
　　文本完成题对应一段文章，有1至3个空，每个空对应三个选项(只有整个段落仅包含一个空时，才出现五个选项)，与目前实行的GRE考试的填空题设置1－2空、每个空都对应五个选项不同。而且，目前的GRE考试的填空题强调词汇的辨认与逻辑关系的把握。例如，
　　Number theory is rich in problems of an especially----sort: they are tantalizingly simple to state but----difficult to solve。
　　(A) cryptic.. deceptively
　　(B) spurious.. equally
　　(C) abstruse.. ostensibly
　　(D) elegant.. rarely

　　本题有两个空，答案是E。本句的意思是：“数论中所包含的大量问题具有一种特别令人苦恼的性质：它们陈述起来简单得诱人，但是解决起来又是出了名的难。”要做好本题，必须认识题中的tantalizingly(逗引性地，诱人地)以及五个选项中、尤其是E选项中(vexing：令人苦恼的；notorious：臭名昭著的；众所周知的)的高级词汇。此外，还必须理解冒号的作用(后半部分解释前半部分)以及but所连接的前后两个部分之间的逻辑关系。
　　与之不同，新GRE的填空题除了上述要求外，正确答案还必须考虑整个段落作为一个语篇的要求以及句子内部的逻辑关系。例如，
　　It is refreshing to read a book about our planet by an author who does not allow facts to be BLANK by politics: well aware of the political disputes about the effects of human activities on climate and biodiversity, this author does not permit them to BLANK his comprehensive description of what we know about our biosphere. He emphasizes the enormous gaps in our knowledge, the sparseness of our observations, and the BLANK, calling attention to the many aspects of planetary evolution that must be better understood before we can accurately diagnose the condition of our planet。

　　由首句中的冒号可知，前两个空的答案应该是同义词，符合要求的分别是overshadowed(掩盖)与obscure(掩盖)。至于第三个空，空格之前的and暗示要填的答案与前面的gaps(空白)和sparseness(稀少)属于同一个语义场，即都表示“有不足”之义，有类似贬义倾向的只有superficiality of our theories(我们理论的肤浅)，因此本段落的正确答案是：overshadowed、obscure与superficiality of our theories。注意：只要任何一个空选错，整个段落的答案就算全部错误。
