Chinas home appliance giant GOME said Thursday it was seeking compensation from its former chairman, Huang Guangyu, who was jailed for 14 years for bribery and insider trading in the mainland.
The company said in a statement that it had filed a writ with Hong Kongs High Court Thursday against Huang to claim damages GOME had suffered as a result of his alleged breaches of fiduciary duties and trust while serving as a director in 2008.
"The arrest and later conviction of Huang for various economic crimes caused a great deal of uncertainty for the company," its board of di-rectors said in the statement posted to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
Huangs act "has had, and to some extent continues to have, a significant adverse effect on the companys activities, and in particular the companys ability to access capital."
Trading in shares of GOME Electrical Appliances Holding was suspended Thursday, the Hong Kong exchange said. No further details were available.
Huang was named Chinas richest man in 2004, 2005 and 2008 by the Hurun Report. In October 2008, his estimated net worth was $6.3 billion.
In late 2008, he was detained and placed under investigation. He resigned as GOME director and chairman in January 2009. Huang was held for more than a year without charge before being tried in April in a Beijing court.
The court found him guilty of bribing or ordering others to bribe five government officials with 4.56 million yuan ($673,311.18) in cash and prop-erties from 2006 to 2008, Xinhua said.
The bribes were offered in exchange for "improper benefits" for GOME.
