Dogs have the rapid intelligence to learn new names objects in some cases after just hearing a word once, according to research published in the United States.

　　 Researchers also concluded that dogs’ brains likely evolve in much the same way as humans, and said this would in part explain their ability to recognize words quickly.

　　 The findings cited the case of Rico, a nine-year-old border collie owned by a German family, which recognizes some 200 words and has the ability to learn the names of unknown toys after they are just shown once.

　　 The researchers said dogs’ learning processes appear to work in much the same way as infants.

　　 Rico was found to have the ability to retrieve an unknown new toy placed among seven toys known to the dog. When the dog’s owner urged him to seek for the new object by saying an unfamiliar word to the border collie, Rico recognized the new toy seven times out of ten.

　　 In a test one month later, Rico recognized, three times out of six, objects from words he’d never been shown to, from a group of four known toys and four new toys.

　　 Researchers said a dog’s mental ability in this respect is equivalent to some infants aged three years.
