There are many different views on language study. One view is that language is a system made up of parts like phonemes, words, phrases and sentences. This view emphasizes the importance of vocabulary and grammar in studying language.

　　Another view is that language is simply to be used! We say it is a tool for communication. This view simplifies the purpose of language study. So, for a lot of students, the purpose of our learning English, say, is about using it. If we follow this view, our studies are designed to help us to communicate better in English. For example, we learn how to greet each other, how to make arrangements, how to suggest things and offer advice.

　　These simple types of communication are used all the time in conversations. So when we speak and listen to each other using language, we share more of our daily lives. This builds bonds between people, and makes language study very rewarding for all of us. In fact, it is one of the main reasons why we should study language. The more we can understand each other, the better!

　　One of the main benefits of the popularity of English is that more people will be able to actively communicate in the future. It is like setting up a huge network ? the bigger it is, the more effective it becomes. If only a few people spoke English, then this small network would only share a limited number of ideas and the network would soon run out of new ones. But many millions all around the world use English, and new people are being added to this network all the time. There is no end to the sharing of ideas and the new ones that come up as a result. This in turn makes English even more popular. And so the network grows even bigger!

　　The result of studying English, or any other language that is growing in popularity, is to create a large impact on all our lives.
