　　遇到表假设的条件状语，我们一般考虑将其放到句首，使句子主干部分更加紧凑，结构也更加简化。
　　If the Security Council deems that continuance of the dispute is in fact likely to endanger the maintenance of international peace and security， it shall decide whether to take action under Article 36 or to recommend such terms of settlement as it may consider appropriate。
　　此句按照上述原则可译成：“安全理事会如认为该项争端之继续存在，在事实上足以危及国际和平和安全之维持时，应决定是否当以第三十六条采取行动或建议其所认为适当之解决条件。”
我们再看一看常用的except的译法：
　　A ground for invalidating，terminating，withdrawing from or suspending the operation of a treaty recognized in the present convention may be invoked only with respect to the whole treaty except as provided in the following paragraphs or in article 60。
　　本句中“except”引导的条件状语，对全句进行了限制，表明了在什么条件下不可以“援引理由”，在语用功能上，它是对条款的补充和修正，含有一定的转折意义，翻译时我们把它译为“…不在此限”放在句末。全句可译为：“本公约所承认之条约失效、终止、退出或停止实行条约之理由仅得对整个条约援引之，但下列各项或第六十条所规定之情形不在此限。”
　　If也是条约重频繁出现的一个连词，下面是一个实例：
　　A fundamental change of circumstances amy not be invoked as a ground for terminating or withdrawing from a treaty：（a）if the treaty establishes a boundary；or （b）if the fundamental change is the result of a breach by the party invoking it either of an obligation under the treaty or of any other international obligation owed t any other arty to the treaty。
　　此句含有两个并列的“if”从句，这是条约用语中所特有的句式。翻译条约时，要尽量保持原文的文格以及形势结构，把“if”还译为“如果”或“若”是不能达到这种效果的，这是我们不妨作一下转换，采用等效的否定句来译，把“if”译为“除非”。全句译为：条约缔结时存在之情况发生基本改变而非当事国所预料者，不得援引为终止或退出条约之理由，除非：
